The Final Blogpost R.I.P

The final blog post for cg1413! Somehow the semester seems to have sped past and it is already the last week, truth be told i am kind of sad to know that most of our class would be fragmented and split next semester, this semester's class was pretty fun!

I felt that I've learnt quite a lot from this module in terms of communication and teamwork, although there is still much more skills to acquire and hone. First off, i must say i have become more aware of how to make powerpoint slides that are easy for the audience to read and understand, as well as be aware of the little nuances that we tend to overlook when preparing slides like font colour, size and phrasing. The advice given to us after each presentation helps to point out stuff where we can improve on and i felt that this is a very useful skill to know!

Secondly, i think i have gained much more confidence and appreciation of the skills involved in presentations. I used to think that presentations were something that happens instinctively and preparation was not necessary, but as each presentation happened, i learnt the fallacy of my ways. Especially after OP2, i realised that improvisation is an impedance for team presentations and that preparation is key for such situations. I managed to learn how to control my subconscious body posture better as well, from meetings, to presentations itself, i managed to stop myself from slouching, leaning, and pointing callously.

For both my 1102 and 1413 project, i felt that i had a great time working on the project with my teammates. I think in both cases, we communicated well within the groups, worked together to solve problems, challenged each other's ideas with courtesy and politeness, in the end leading to a harmonious working relationship.

Last but not least, i've also learned to appreciate the finer points of being careful with the way we write in any form, all these blog posts have reminded me to be careful with spelling errors, the need for proper phrasing and somehow, the 7C's are always haunting me at the back of my mind whenever i write these days!

In summary, apart from all the presentations and the multiple reflections, i've really enjoyed the lessons, thanks to Mr Stephen and my classmates no less have played a huge part in making the module fun!

  1. Hi Jeremy,

As you had mentioned, I am also slightly sad that the semester is coming to a close. Although this semester has been an overload of projects and assignments , the very taxing nature of this semester enabled us to push ourselves further and recalibrate our preceived limits.

Furthermore, it does help to note that we had forged many invaluable friendships with others in this course. Basically we cannot be an effective communicator without knowing anyone to communicate with.

You had brought up many improvements and pointers that would help you in your pursuit of becoming an effective communicator. Among others you mentioned your clearer understanding of effectively utilizing presentation slides, being made more aware of your subconscious body postures and appreciating the finer points of communication.

I am glad to note that you had enjoyed CG1413 lessons and managed to walk away a more knowledgeable and enlightened individual in effective communication.

    Best Regards,
    Khairul

  3. Hi Jeremy,

Firstly, I thought this semester was really fast too. In addition, it was reasonably tough as there are three projects in total.

In terms of teamwork and communication skills, I think most of us have practised them to the maximum since there are three different teams and really need to communicate well and work together to prevent conflicts. We also have our much dreaded video-taped meetings and presentations that we can review. Hence I agree that it is really a lot we can take away from this module.

Furthermore, upon learning that you had an enjoyable time with your teams, I feel it is indeed commendable. As the projects have their own different problems, when all are not going as well as planned, it can be really frustrating and relations might turn sour. I suppose you have more or less understood those skills to be able to feel how you felt.

I agree with you that CG1413 module can help to improve one’s writing skills too. The blog posts are spread throughout the semester so that we can write consistently. In addition, we need to keep in mind the 7Cs and this makes it more challenging and time-consuming to complete each week’s blog and responses. All this, I hope, have really improved my writing.

In conclusion, I am very glad that I am in the same problem-solving team as you. I feel that you are a good team member as you always contributed to new ideas and have completed your parts on time. I hope your presentations skills will improve as you wished and good luck for the final exams.

  4. Hi Jeremy,

The RIP in the title is catchy, most especially when you reiterated that the 7C’s will HAUNT you. Hahas!

I agree that this semester went by really fast. It is because there is hardly any time to take a break and have a deep breath from all of the hustle and bustle of the CEG life. =). I also share your sentiments in regard to the foreseen fragmentation of the classes in the future. Our modules have helped us forge bonds of friendships among each other and it sure can get sentimental remembering the fun classes that we all had.

It’s great to hear about the concrete thoughts and specific examples you posted. These clearly show the wisdom you have gained from your experiences this semester. I am sure that you will become a very effective team player and communicator in the future since you always reflect on and analyze constructively your performance.

    All the best!

    Regards,
    Paul

  5. Hi Jeremy!

I am also quite sad that this semester is ending. Unlike last semester I get to know and interact with many people this semester which make it (a bit) less boring. It is good to know that you have learnt a lot of things from this module which means all of your hard work is paid off :)

I agree with you that by preparing the presentations for this module, we learn more about making good presentation slides. Before, I tended to put so many words in a presentation slides and had no idea about the rule of seven. However, now that I know it, I will surely include some diagrams instead of just filling a slide with words in my future presentations.

The part when you mention about presentation being instinctive really strikes me. Before I came here, and even before my second oral presentation, I have always thought that way too. That is why I have never really done a preparation for a presentation except for the slides. Only after my first oral presentation, I realized that preparation is an important thing to mind indeed. Therefore, I prepared better for my second oral presentation. Though there were of course many things that I can still improve on.

Regarding the 7Cs, I am glad to hear that you still remember it. Just a suggestion, perhaps you can proof read your post before you actually publish it and capitalize all of your ‘i’s :D Anyway, good luck for you exams!

    Regards,
    Christabel
